A number of followers of this blog have asked us about the gardening charities we support here at Bulldog Tools. Although there are a number of charitable organisations, events and giving opportunities that we contribute to, the following organisations receive our support on a regular basis.
RHS – The Royal Horticultural Society is the world’s leading gardening charity and was founded in 1804 in London. As well as having a number of commercial relationships including attending RHS shows and supplying tools to both the various RHS garden locations and the trading division of the charity, Bulldog Tools support the RHS Campaign for School Gardening with free tools for teachers and last year we supplied garden designer Ann-Marie Powell and her team with a wide range of Bulldog Premier Tools for the construction and planting phases of her Chelsea Flower Show garden as part of the RHS ‘Greening Grey Britain’ initiative. You can find out more about the RHS here.
The Big Dig – This is an annual event organised by the Sustain charity who aim to get more people involved in community food growing as part of their mission to advocate food and agriculture policies and practices that enhance the health and welfare of people and animals, improve the working and living environment, promote equity and enrich society and culture. The Big Dig is based around the three main cities of London (Capital Growth), Manchester (Sow the City) and Birmingham (Growing Birmingham), however this is a nationwide initiative and Bulldog supports the event by giving away five prizes of garden tools sets worth £150.00 each to the best gardening idea or initiative sent via image or video to our Bulldog Tools Garden Club Facebook page. Perennial – The Gardeners’ Benevolent Institution, now known as Perennial was founded on 17th January 1839 and is the UK’s only charity dedicated to helping everyone who works in horticulture and their families when times get tough. We support a number of Perennial’s horticultural and fundraising activities including Party for Perennial, York Gate Garden, the Perennial Legacy Garden at the RHS Flower Show Tatton Park and the Essence of York Gate garden Harrogate Spring Flower Show which won the Best in Show and the Newby Hall Cup awards. You can see more details about Perennial’s work here.
MPGA – The Metropolitan Public Gardens Association was formed in 1882 with the principal object of its constitution to be ‘the protection, preservation, safeguarding and acquiring for permanent preservation for public use, of gardens, disused burial grounds, churchyards, open spaces, areas of land likely to be used for building purposes, strips of land adjoining roads and footpaths, or any land situated within the Metropolitan Police District or in its vicinity.’ They also ensure the provision of seating and the planting of trees in these areas. Bulldog Tools are very happy to sponsor both the MPGA AGM each year and donate a spade for the Association’s annual Spade Award. Please click here for more information about the MPGA.
Institute of Horticulture – Bulldog Tools are proud to be one of the national sponsors of the Young Horticulturist of the Year award. The competition usually includes more than 2,000 participants, with total prizes exceeding £10,000 and the prestigious £2,000 Percy Thrower Travel Bursary going to the winner. We donate sets of our Premier range of Bulldog Tools to successful entrants and hope that using our quality tools becomes an important part of their long and illustrious gardening careers. Windlesham Trophy – The Windlesham Trophy is an annual competition run by the Ministry of Justice and the Royal Horticultural Society for prison gardens and gardening. It was founded in 1983 by Lord Windlesham, the chairman of the parole board to give prisoners a sense of worth and to promote gardening excellence. Since 2016 we have been the sole commercial supporters of the Windlesham Trophy and donate over £1,500.00 worth of our Bulldog Tools to the winners, runners up and finalists.
